SILVER project

Social Assistance Platform, focused on comprehensive care for prevention and self-care

Objective

The PLATAS project is included in the Digital Citizenship strategic line of the Avanza Plan. It includes the implementation and piloting of new socio-health services based on the use of ICTs that allow older people in a situation of mild or moderate dependency to be maintained in their usual environment, that is, their home, their neighborhood and their city. Part of an approach based on the prevention of dependency, the promotion of independent living and healthy aging, encouraging the social participation of users and their proactive behavior towards their own health care.

The PLATAS project received the Infanta Cristina Award for Innovative Experience 2008 and ACCESSIT of the Plan Avanza Award 2006 in the category of Inclusion in the Information Society: Elderly and Disabled.

Services and Pilot

The services integrated into the platform can be grouped into three areas: social participation, e-health and support for daily life.

  • SOCIAL PARTICIPATION. This category of services is oriented towards the provision of information and communication services that allow older people to relate more to their environment, thus increasing their social participation. Includes two services:
    • – Inform. This service is aimed at both older people and caregivers. It consists of sending useful information (advice on healthy habits, in heat and cold waves, better care, temperature alerts, information on leisure activities and free time, etc.). In addition, the information will be available in different formats and through different channels that will be selected by the user: SMS, MMS or video through television.
    • – Video attention. It fulfills a double objective: on the one hand, it enriches the communication of the elderly with their environment, family and friends, and with the Care Center by including video in calls and the design of a simple interface based on television. and the telephone. On the other, it means the introduction of another channel of information and content.
  • E-HEALTH. The services included in this category are intended to motivate older people to lead healthy lifestyles. They are based on a prevention approach and encourage people to take care of themselves, so that they become involved in monitoring and improving their own health. There are two services:
    • – Monitoring of Arterial Hypertension. The objective of this service is to provide the user with a tool for managing their self-care, thus favoring a greater involvement of people in controlling their blood pressure without neglecting the necessary professional support and follow-up. Users must have their blood pressure measured in compliance with a defined protocol, and following some advice that will be provided by qualified personnel.
    • – Promotion of Personal Activity. Exercising, especially daily walking for a minimum of 30 minutes continuously, is suitable exercise for any age and is a preventive element for multiple pathologies. For this purpose, this service has been designed, the objective of which is to prevent a sedentary lifestyle by involving the user in carrying out a plan of daily walks.
  • SUPPORT TO DAILY LIFE and RISK PREVENTION. The objective is to create services that assist older people during their daily lives and provide early warning of any eventuality that may happen to them.
    • – Prevention and Lifestyles. During the project, various solutions have been tested for the detection of changes in the daily routines of people that make it possible to predict any emergency or mental crisis in the user. It is a proactive service aimed at maintaining a good quality of life based on prevention.

These services have been piloted with more than 100 users from Tenerife (Island of La Palma), Huesca, Valladolid, León and Salamanca.

The PLATAS project started in November 2006 and ended in June 2008.

Result

The first conclusion drawn from the project is the demonstration of the utility that new technologies have for social care and health services. These benefits are easily recognizable in the results obtained for each of the services.

As for Informa, it has been proven that the service is a motivating element to learn and use the mobile phone in those people who previously did not use it, managing to arouse their interest.

In the video assistance service, the benefits it has for self-care and social participation of the elderly stand out, the latter especially in those with reduced mobility or situations of isolation. Thus, it has been found that the effect of the image causes greater personal care. In addition, there have been cases of consolidation and even an increase in the social environment of the elderly as a result of the installation of the system in her home.

The e-Health services have shown the positive of self-care. Not only has the ability of the elderly to comply with the protocols been verified, but the health benefits have also been revealed. Regarding Arterial Hypertension, high and low blood pressure have been reduced by 8% and 11% respectively. Regarding Promotion of Personal Activity, an increase in daily activity of 30% for active users and 39% for less active users has been observed.

Finally, for Prevention and Lifestyles, various commercial platforms have been compared, developing a state of the art on them.
